Surge Comparison Test

Request a Quote

The Surge Comparison Test is a crucial diagnostic tool utilized to identify shorts and insulation vulnerabilities in coils, windings, electric motors, generators, alternators, and transformers. It is specifically designed to pinpoint faults that often occur turn-to-turn, coil-to-coil, or phase-to-phase. Additionally, it also reveals issues like incorrect internal connections and turn counts. The primary concern addressed by this test is weak insulation, which is a leading cause of winding failures.

Ghaima Group, an expert electro mechanical company, conducts this meticulous testing procedure to efficiently assess motor reliability and create comprehensive maintenance programs. Our highly experienced team specializes in identifying hidden faults and weaknesses, preventing costly defects from reaching our clients. Further, they take proactive measures to improve equipment reliability and mitigate the risk of failures. For more information about our surge comparison test service, contact us now. We also offer other mechanical and electrical services, including motor rewinding, transformer repair, and more.

Failures Detected by the Test

Some of the major failures detected are:

  • Weak insulation
  • Electrical shorts
  • Inconsistent turn counts
  • Incorrect coils or group connections

How Does It Work?

Some of the major failures detected are:

  • During testing, a series of rapidly rising pulses is applied to the coil or motor under examination. When these pulses pass through the equipment, the tester's oscilloscope channel records the resulting decaying waveform. These waveforms are then compared against each other, either within the same coil or with the waves from different motor phases.
  • When the coils or windings are identical and free from faults or insulation weaknesses, the displayed waveforms appear almost identical. However, if any of the coils or windings have a fault or insulation weakness, the corresponding waveform will deviate in frequency from the others, causing it to appear separate and distinct from the rest.
  • By analyzing these waveforms, our professionals can identify specific issues and take corrective measures to ensure the proper functioning of the coil or motor and maintain the overall integrity of the system.
